Purple Heart Medal: The Purple Heart Medal is awarded to Department members who, through no fault of their own, sustain a traumatic physical injury as a result of a violent encounter with the criminal element, a high-risk law enforcement function, or an accident, and continue to perform their job.

The award consists of a medal, a ribbon, and a citation.

Awarded posthumously, the Purple Heart Medal honors Deputy Ryshard Byrd for his exceptional bravery and sacrifice in the line of duty.

On May 27th, 2025, Deputy Byrd gave his life in the service of his community during a high-risk gang operation. His courage, professionalism, and selflessness are a testament to the values we swear to uphold. Byrd died doing what he loved, protecting others. His sacrifice will never be forgotten, and his legacy remains etched into the heart of this department.

Rest in peace, Deputy Byrd. You will always be remembered.
