Disqualification

There are very few automatic bases for rejection. Even issues of prior misconduct, such as prior illegal drug use, driving under the influence, theft, or even arrest or conviction are usually not, in and of themselves, automatically disqualifying. However, deliberate misstatements or omissions can and often will result in your application being rejected, regardless of the nature or reason for the misstatements/omissions. In fact, the number one reason individuals “fail” background investigations is because they deliberately withhold or misrepresent job-relevant information from their prospective employer.

BOTTOM LINE: You are responsible for providing complete, accurate, and truthful responses.

DeeLaila Cardoso was born and raised in the vibrant streets of East Los Santos, DeeLaila Cardoso was no stranger to hardship. The youngest of four siblings, she spent most of her childhood in a small, modest apartment with her mother, a nurse at the local clinic, and her father, who worked as a mechanic. Despite the love and care from her parents, DeeLaila witnessed the struggles of growing up in a neighborhood where crime was prevalent, and the sound of sirens often became the background noise to daily life.

From a young age, DeeLaila showed a keen sense of responsibility. While others around her succumbed to the pressures of their environment, she developed an inner drive to make a difference. Inspired by her mother’s work at the clinic, she wanted to help her community, but she knew she didn’t want to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Instead, DeeLaila set her sights on something bigger: justice.

Her decision to pursue a career in law enforcement was shaped by an encounter when she was 17. One evening, as she and her friends were walking home from a local diner, they were caught in the middle of a street brawl between two rival gangs. The police arrived quickly, but the situation escalated before they could gain control. DeeLaila was left shaken, but also filled with a sense of purpose. She realized that the law was the only force strong enough to keep the streets safe, to protect innocent people, and to hold those who hurt others accountable.

DeeLaila immediately began volunteering at community outreach programs, mentoring young people, and working closely with local youth groups. She earned her high school diploma and then pursued a degree in Criminal Justice at San Fierro State University, where she excelled academically, all while balancing part-time jobs to help support her family. She knew that law enforcement wasn’t just about catching criminals it was about protecting her community and making it a place where people could thrive, free from fear.

After graduating with honors, DeeLaila knew her next step was clear. She returned to Los Santos with the intention of joining the Los Santos County Sheriff's Department. She felt an urgent calling to serve in the same streets that had shaped her. With a background in community outreach, a deep understanding of the challenges facing her neighborhood, and a genuine desire to help, DeeLaila knew she could make a real difference as a sheriff.

Her motivation for applying to the LSSD isn’t about power or prestige it's about hope. DeeLaila is committed to being the change she wants to see, providing a positive example for the younger generation, and helping to rebuild the trust between the community and law enforcement. Her life experiences have made her determined, resilient, and focused. She understands the challenges that come with this job, but she is ready to face them head-on.

Her journey is far from over, but DeeLaila Cardoso is prepared to take the next step in her quest to serve and protect, and to stand up for justice in the heart of Los Santos County.
