SUSPECT OF DEADLY ASSAULT ON A DEPUTY SHERIFF TAKEN DOWN IN HOT PURSUIT
Sheriff Kenneth Larosa stated that in the early morning hours of June 29th, 2023, a tragic shooting took place on Magellan Avenue during a routine traffic stop on a black sedan. Two armed gunmen opened fire, leading to the untimely death of a Deputy Sheriff. The incident caused shockwaves throughout the community and prompted an immediate response from law enforcement and nearby Fire Department/Emergency Medical Teams.
In response to the shooting, the Major Crimes Bureau took over the investigation. Their specialized team began diligently gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing the crime scene to bring those responsible for this heinous act to justice. Major Crimes Bureau released an attempt to identify notification to the entire department, which resulted in the capture of the driver on June 30th.
On July 1st, patrol deputies assigned to the Sheriff's West Vinewood Station observed the suspect in question in a rental vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle took off from both of the deputies at a high rate of speed, who then communicated with both the Major Crimes Bureau and the Special Enforcement Bureau. The Special Enforcement Bureau responded to the pursuit and within minutes had the vehicle stopped in Little Soeul. The driver got out of the vehicle and exchanged fire with the Special Enforcement Bureau, resulting in the suspect succumbing from his injuries.
