The San Andreas Sheriff's Department recently had 30 applicants apply for recruitment drive 0823. After extensive testing and background investigation, we have now arrived at our final graduates. On Saturday, August 19, 2023, a total of 17 polished recruits took to the stage at the Vinewood Bowl for their final presentation as Recruits. The graduates spent 22 weeks of rigorous academy training at the Eugene W. Biscailuz Center.

The welcome speech was given by Deputy Sheriff (Bonus II) Cooper Pierce, who is the Acting Pre-Employment Unit Lieutenant. Sheriff Kenneth Larosa presided the ceremony, and was joined on stage by Executive Staff - Undersheriff Roderick Hayward, Division Chief Canyon Drummond and Command Staff - Captain Emilo Colon, Captain Jordan Knight, Captain Robert McNeal, Captain Raymond Velazquez, Commander Aaron Valdez, and Captain Javier Morea.

In a special segment of the ceremony, Gabriel Medina was named as the class Honor Recruit. This award is earned by the recruit who achieved the highest numerical average based upon leadership qualities, academics, marksmanship, and physical performance throughout the training period. He received the coveted Golden Pistol from Sheriff Larosa.

The ceremony was a formal transformation of academy recruits into sworn peace officers. Sheriff Larosa delivered encouraging remarks to the guests and our fellow graduates:

Each class of recruits processed through the Eugene W. Biscailuz Center brings together a collection of unique aspects, qualities, and experiences. Of the 17 graduating recruits, 2 were born outside of the United States in the countries of Mexico and South Africa; 4 were from out of San Andreas prior to application including Nebraska, Florida, and Texas; and 13 of the recruits speak a language other than English, including German, Swedish, French, and American Sign Language (ASL).

These graduates bring with them a source of higher education (10) and experience in the armed forces (3).
